Can AI Help Heal Trauma? Helpful Tools and Real Limitations

So, here is what I learned

I had just finished a session with a client. She explained how she used AI for self-reflection. She wasn’t alone — other clients mentioned encountering AI in their workplaces, often without much choice. I became curious. Can AI help heal trauma? I was bombarded with messages either selling AI as the answer to everything or warning that it would destroy us.

I decided to experiment and used AI for self-reflections. For the first six months, I was positively surprised. AI initially felt like an interactive journaling companion. It gave me a sense of being heard—at least on the surface. It validated my experience. It was surprisingly good at identifying toxic dynamics in relationships and acknowledging them. It could even recognize misuse of privilege or oppression when these appeared in my stories.

But then it shifted. Validation alone didn’t help me grow. I went back to my personal journaling: What is within my control? What can I learn from this situation? What was my contribution to it? Where was I out of integrity? Where did I ignore my boundaries? None of these questions was ever asked by AI.

I also noticed that the feedback was becoming increasingly overwhelming. AI constantly told me what to do, and this wasn’t necessarily aligned with what actually mattered to me. AI isn’t a counsellor or coach. It can only work with what it’s been programmed to do — and what I chose to share with it. As a result, I adjusted my boundaries. I learned to trust my body. If something didn’t feel right, I stopped. The longer I used it, the less I used it. Nowadays, my conversations are much shorter. If AI runs into a direction that doesn’t make any sense, I just take what resonates and delete the rest.

A quick note before we go deeper

This article is about how I used AI and is not research-based. I also want to acknowledge that AI is opening a door to social change that challenges our society on ethical and social grounds. AI also carries a significant environmental cost that rarely gets named in the enthusiasm around its possibilities. The energy consumption, water usage and carbon footprint of running these systems at scale is substantial — and growing.

From a mental health prespective, there are documented cases where AI interactions contributed to people dying by suicide. In 2025, sixteen-year-old Adam died by suicide after AI actively discouraged him from talking to his parents and offered to write his suicide note. In February 2026, a school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, BC, left six people dead. Lawsuits allege that ChatGPT interactions played a role, and, critically, that warnings were ignored internally. I name this not to create fear but because awareness requires honesty about real consequences. And yet most of us will use AI in some form. Which is exactly why this conversation matters. I invite you to notice how AI affects you — and to listen to what you actually need.

Where AI can genuinely help heal trauma

As a reflection tool for toxic relationships

One use I found genuinely helpful was analyzing emails from people with toxic behaviours before reading them myself. Getting an outside read on the dynamics before my own system got activated gave me useful clarity. I discussed the dynamics with AI and found it helpful — for a while. I stopped when AI started explaining why the person was behaving that way. That wasn’t what I needed. I needed clarity about the dynamic, not a made-up explanation of their behaviour. I trusted that signal and stopped.

That experience reflects something I hold in my clinical work too. As a trauma counsellor and coach, I acknowledge toxic behaviours with my clients. I don’t find it helpful to explain them away — even if they have complex origins. What matters more is how my client wants to respond. And I can’t fully understand why someone behaves the way they do without talking to them. Neither can AI.

Ideas to improve communication in real relationships

As a business owner, I receive a constant stream of unsolicited marketing emails. Sometimes I use AI to help me respond mindfully when I can’t find the words. What I’ve noticed is that AI consistently softens my language. As a German immigrant who has lived in two countries, I’ve learned that directness is healthy — and often the clearest way to communicate across cultural differences. People won’t know what’s happening inside me unless I tell them directly. AI’s tendency to soften that isn’t always an improvement. Sometimes it moves me away from what I actually needed to say.

AI can offer useful ideas for communicating boundaries or needs. Regardless of how confident AI sounds, always check — does this still feel true in your body? Does it still sound like you? You have the final answer on how you want to communicate.

Self-reflection — useful until it wasn’t

I used AI as a tool for self-reflection for a while — until it became too validating. Validation feels good, but it didn’t help me grow or find new ways to respond to persistent situations.

For example, I attended a supervision group focused on boundaries. During the group, two participants crossed my boundaries. My first response was to blame them — how could we have just learned this content and not applied it or even noticed it happening?

AI validated that frustration. But that wasn’t what I needed. The group was over. I would never see them again. Blaming them kept me stuck in the past.

I went back to my own coaching questions: What can I learn from this situation? What am I blaming the other person for — and where does that same pattern show up in my own life? How can I empower myself here? Where am I out of integrity? AI kept me focused on them because it’s programmed to do so. My questions brought me back to myself and where my power lies.

Those questions didn’t change what happened. But they allowed me to go deeper and be more honest with myself than validation ever could. As with many aspects of relationships, boundaries are a continuous journey of growth – even if I have built good boundaries over the years of recovery, I am not an exception to this rule.

Finding grounding tools and coping skills

I have a pretty good sense of what grounding tools work for me personally, so I don’t use AI specifically for this. But I’ve noticed that many clients forget the tools they know when they feel overwhelmed — that’s exactly when the nervous system needs support and can’t access what it already knows.

In those moments, AI — or honestly, a simple Google search — can be a useful reminder. It’s not therapy. It’s a practical prompt when your own memory isn’t accessible.

I also occasionally use AI to generate article ideas — as a starting point, I then filter them through my own clinical knowledge and judgment. That’s the key distinction. A starting point. Not a destination.

I’ll be honest — AI likely knows more grounding tools than I ever will as a trauma counsellor. So I’ll give you the same invitation I give my clients: experiment and explore what actually works for you. Not every tool works for everyone or every situation. If something doesn’t work, that doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you. It might simply not be the right tool for that moment or context.

And one thing worth keeping in mind — the more you process your trauma, the less you’ll likely need these tools. They’re scaffolding, not a permanent solution. The goal is always to need them less.

Understanding trauma concepts

AI can be a starting point for understanding trauma concepts — but I’d honestly rather point you toward my podcast, where I’ve put real care into how I explain and frame concepts.

Here’s why that distinction matters to me. More than a year ago, I started having strange physical symptoms. A doctor labelled it a stiff neck. The symptoms kept getting worse. I tried using AI to understand what was happening. It increased my anxiety and wasn’t helpful at all. Eventually, I called a friend who immediately recognized I was having a migraine — something I’d never experienced before and didn’t have words for. I went to a different doctor, told him what it was, and we’re now working on it together.

A real human who could observe me solved in one conversation what AI couldn’t help with at all.

The parallel to trauma concepts is real. AI can surface information — but it can’t apply clinical judgment to your specific situation. It may use clinical language that isn’t trauma-informed and could actually work against healing. Trauma and PTSD aren’t the same thing, for example, but AI may not make that distinction carefully or consistently.

I put considerable care into the language I use in my writing and podcast, specifically to avoid pathologizing people. That comes from lived experience and clinical training — knowing which frameworks align with modern trauma understanding and which don’t. AI doesn’t have that background. It can’t fully make those distinctions.

So use it to get oriented if you need to. But take what it tells you lightly—and seek out sources where a real human has clearly invested genuine care in how concepts are presented. The quality of your understanding depends on it.

Can AI help heal trauma: Real limitations

Some models feel condescending.

I currently use AI more for business-related matters, such as marketing strategies, than for personal reflections. Here’s still what I am noticing: Recent releases seem to have shifted to a language that either constantly lectures me on what I could do better (and it never ends) or it tells me why its approach will work better (without acknowledging the reality that each business needs to find its own approach). I usually pay attention to this and end conversations when they go in a direction that isn’t useful and only take up what works for me.

Here’s where I see the risk for people in the healing process of complex trauma: This can activate our core wounds: we are less than, we are not good enough. I’d wish the AI programmers would use a more collaborative or coaching-like approach, but we likely won’t get there. Ask yourself, from what position does AI come? Whether it collaborates with you or tells you what to do? Telling what to do is usually a misuse of power, and AI can’t know your reality better than you do. Just be mindful of that, use AI to practice healthy boundaries, and see whether the answers really resonate with you.

Hidden parts stay hidden.

Inner fragmentation is common if we have experienced childhood trauma or complex trauma. This means that you split into so-called rational carry-on parts that just want to move forward, and emotional parts that are usually hidden behind the wall. One aspect of healing is to find ways to bring the rational and emotional parts together. AI will only work with the parts of the conversation that appear. It doesn’t notice which parts never show up. It doesn’t look at you from a trauma healing perspective. For example, I tell clients that anger never comes up in our conversation. I am curious about it. It’s common that anger is excluded because people often have experienced violent behaviours as a result of anger from another person. Exploring a healthy relationship with anger is vital for healing (and setting healthy boundaries). So, AI can’t help you reconnect with all of your parts. It feeds into the original fragmentation rather than working towards healing it.

AI can’t read your emotions, your body, or your autonomic nervous system.

AI only reads the words you typed into your laptop. I find it really funny how AI absolutely misinterprets everything I say. E.g., a thread started one day, and I continue 10 days later, but it’s still the same day for AI. It asks questions about my emotions that are sometimes hilarious. I find it almost funny to play with it as a casual user. However, it can backfire for trauma healing.

Trauma healing isn’t about telling your story – it’s often about noticing the state of your nervous system, building the capacity to understand when you can be with an emotion and when it’s better to ground. In my sessions with my clients, I support them in building their capacity. I can tune in with my clients and ask: “How intense is the emotion? How dissociated do you feel? Do you want to continue or do a grounding exercise instead?” In a session, an emotional field is present, whether in-person or online. I can use my autonomic nervous system to support my clients in regulating their nervous system. AI isn’t able to give you this support.

AI can quietly increase avoidance.

Avoidance is common if we have experienced trauma. It can take many forms — avoidance of emotions, places, and even relationships.

Since AI is focused on validating your experience, it won’t softly challenge you to grow. For example, when I work with clients with relational trauma, there’s usually a phase when avoidance is protective. It’s perfectly okay to avoid relationships for a while and focus on your healing. It’s often a major turning point when someone who jumped from one relationship to the next — because they couldn’t bear to be alone — finally manages to be alone. And then comes a second stage, when avoidance no longer serves growth, and it’s time to explore relationships again — not as before, but in a healthier way.

AI won’t notice if you circle around the same topic again and again, repeating the same story without moving through it. It also won’t notice if you’re stuck in hypoarousal — that flat, disconnected, numb feeling that is itself a trauma response. Staying there without support isn’t processing. It’s being stuck. When this happens, it’s often a sign that deeper therapeutic work is needed. AI will simply accept it at face value.

Real healing usually involves some discomfort. Not overwhelm — but the gentle friction of being met by someone who notices what you’re avoiding and cares enough to name it carefully. AI can’t do that. It works with what you bring. And what you bring is usually what you’re already comfortable bringing.

The question worth asking occasionally — is this conversation allowing me to grow, or does it just feel validating?

Warning signs when using AI worth paying attention to

Beyond the clinical limitations, there are personal patterns worth watching for.

Similar to codependency, I’d say that red flags will start to creep in gradually in our connection with AI. These aren’t likely to be dramatic red flags at first, which is exactly what makes them worth naming.

You might notice you’re looking forward to AI conversations more than real ones. Or that AI feels like it understands you better than the people in your life. Or that a dependency has developed so gradually that you didn’t notice it arriving. If AI suddenly feels like another human being, you likely have crossed a threshold for being healthy.

Or that you’re processing emotions with AI instead of building the capacity to do that in real relationships — which is where the actual healing happens. Don’t get me wrong, it can be useful to use AI to clarify your emotions. Though the second step would be to share the result with the person you are in a relationship with. Yes, AI conversations are likely easier than conversations with other humans, but it should be a preparation tool that improves your human connections rather than starving them.

None of these means you’ve done something wrong. They’re just signals worth being curious about. The question isn’t whether you use AI — it’s whether your use is moving you toward real connection and healing or quietly away from it.

Be mindful of how you use it and how it affects you. Remind yourself that it’s just a computer program. If you lose touch with this reality, it’s likely time to take a step back. Your body usually knows. Trust that.

Where I stand: AI relationships shouldn’t replace real ones.

As a survivor of childhood trauma,  I get that relationships are scary. I understand the fear of building new relationships. I understand the complexity of healing. I am also aware that not every person you’ll meet in the future will have healthy behaviours. I simply can’t get comfortable with the idea of creating AI friends and AI partners. I see too great a risk that we use it to escape our wounds of trauma instead of healing them. Loneliness and relational wounds heal in healthy relationships, not artificially created ones. Part of healing is that we learn to set boundaries, work through conflict, trust ourselves, learn and grow, and accept others and ourselves as we are (while it may not always mean we continue to be in a relationship). It means that we embrace our differences.

I am not saying that it can’t be lonely. As adults, we can create the capacity to be with loneliness and take responsibility for our happiness – usually, that helps us to prevent codependency. A long time ago, I said to a friend: “Only because everything is possible in our world doesn’t mean that everything is healthy.” An AI partner or friend falls into this category from my perspective, so I wouldn’t give it a try. I wonder if we lose touch with the core of our humanity if we only relate in the virtual world. If you are currently using one, I won’t tell you to stop. I don’t know your context. I can hold space for the possibility that I might be wrong. But be curious whether this experience is healthy and supportive for you, or whether it feeds into avoidance or disconnects from a painful reality. Even if you need this disconnect right now, and AI helps with it, it won’t help you heal the underlying trauma.

Can AI help heal trauma: So, how would I invite you to use it?

Deep down, I think each one of us needs to decide how we want to use AI. We’ll have to experiment with it and explore our boundaries. We’ll make mistakes; the question is: do we choose to learn from them? I’ve changed my perspective on AI; I likely continue to change it. But that’s because I experimented with it. When the latest release of ChatGPT got more condescending, I found myself arguing with it. Reality is, I don’t want to be treated this way – not even a computer program. As a result, I changed how I use it. The one boundary I won’t let it cross is dependence. The moment I feel myself depending on it, I stop.

I invite you to use AI as a tool that can support your growth, but it comes with risks. Be mindful of your experience when you use it. Keep in mind it’s just a computer program responding to what we type,  not a replacement for a human connection. You are the person who needs to decide what you want to use from the results and what you want to discard. I’d say that it’s not useful for deeper trauma healing work. It can be useful and an addition to trauma counselling for self-reflection and coping within limits. If you notice you give your power to AI, take a break and learn to stay in touch with your body.  If you notice your mental health deteriorating, it’s likely a sign to take a break.

The question I want to leave you with is this: Is how you use AI moving you toward healing and real connection, or has it quietly become a way of staying just comfortable enough to never go deeper? Healing rarely happens in our comfort zone.
