About Me

Trauma Counsellor & Coach

Healing is possible and science proves it.

Healing isn’t just a hopeful idea — neuroscience shows that our brains and nervous systems can change, repair, and grow throughout life through neuroplasticity. This isn’t just theory for me. I’ve experienced this transformation in my own recovery journey and I witness it regularly in the people I work with.

Natalie Jovanic, trauma counsellor Calgary and coach specializing in online trauma recovery and trauma-informed services.

I’m Natalie Jovanic (they/them), a trauma counsellor, trauma-informed counsellor, and trauma coach in Calgary. With over 14 years of experience, I support people to overcome adversity, heal from childhood abuse and relational challenges, and feel empowered in their lives. I offer trauma-informed counselling and coaching, including EMDR therapy, trauma counselling, and grief support, both online and in-person in Calgary.

I’m passionate about helping people heal, grow, and reclaim their lives. The most important part of my learning comes from listening to my clients — their insights, experiences, and wisdom continually shape my approach. While I bring specialized expertise in trauma recovery, you are the expert on your own life.

My journey from darkness to freedom

On a warm Tuesday morning in September, my mother died after a period of great suffering. I could not imagine my life without her, and I did not know how my life would continue. Her doctor encouraged me to see my mother’s death as though it had brought her freedom. Freedom… I sensed by the energy of her words that being free must be wonderful. Freedom was a concept I had never known before; sadness and pain were what I knew. I felt that maybe it was a wonderful choice for my mom. Would I have to die first to be free from suffering? It was that day when I was 19 years old that I left home forever. I left behind darkness and violence and began my search for freedom.

Years later, while washing my hair, I caught myself watching the water disappear down the drain. A feeling emerged from within me that I could finally put words to: I felt as if my life was running away. I had a good job and a relationship, but I was trapped in my fears and with a deep sense of worthlessness. At that moment, I knew I deserved something better. I needed to change something and knew that only I could make a difference. I started the process of change — cutting my hair, taking drawing classes, and starting yoga. Then I moved into an international career, eager to see whether these changes would improve other areas of my life. At last, I was ready to take ownership of my happiness.

Months later, I sat in a little bar by the Bi Tan Lake in Taiwan, sharing stories of our relationships with my colleagues. I could hear the love and respect in their voices when they spoke of their partners. Suddenly, I noticed I could not talk about my partner this way; I did not feel those things. I realized that my relationship was not how I wanted it to be. Soon after, my attempt to make changes failed, and I decided it was better to leave my partner. Once again, I took the right action at the right time through self-awareness and responsibility.

In the following years, I worked towards integrating my childhood trauma — whether it was re-connecting with my fragmented parts, finding ways to navigate my trauma responses, or releasing the trauma that was stored in my body.

What I learned on my trauma recovery journey

These experiences taught me the power of self-awareness, responsibility, and action. They also showed me how important it is to tune in, grow as a human being, and learn to respect and trust myself. I understood that healing cannot be separated from systemic dynamics — recognizing and validating these forces matters, and true recovery requires power with, not power over.

These lessons shape my approach to counselling. I support people in taking ownership of their healing, navigating trauma safely, and finding empowerment in their lives. My own journey allows me to hold space with authenticity, empathy, and a deep understanding of what it means to reclaim one’s life after adversity.

How I work: Core values that guide our journey together

Our relationship comes first

The foundation of healing is relationship. Research consistently shows that the therapeutic alliance — built on trust, collaboration, and genuine connection — is the most powerful predictor of positive outcomes. As your trauma counsellor in Calgary, I prioritize creating and maintaining a safe, supportive relationship where you feel truly seen and respected. I model healthy relational behaviour and take responsibility for noticing and restoring our connection when needed, especially important for those healing from relational trauma.

Specialized trauma expertise

Many counsellors and coaches aren’t specifically trained in trauma work, which can inadvertently cause harm. I’ve pursued extensive specialized training in trauma-focused approaches including EMDR therapy, nervous system regulation, complex trauma, attachment, and structural dissociation. This expertise allows me to support you through childhood abuse, relational trauma, and complex PTSD while helping you strengthen boundaries, regulate emotions, and build safe, empowering connections. Using evidence-based methods, we work together to support activated parts, expand your window of tolerance, and increase your sense of safety.

Safety, empowerment and your agency

I create a space where you feel safe to explore, make choices about your healing, and move at your own pace. We work within your window of tolerance, using trauma-informed approaches that honour your nervous system. Through our relationship, we co-regulate, build inner safety, and strengthen your awareness of needs and boundaries — both in and outside sessions. You maintain complete control over what we discuss and when.

Accountability and anti-oppressive practices

I take responsibility for my behaviour and welcome your feedback to ensure our work remains respectful and trustworthy. I actively reflect on how my biases, assumptions, and privilege influence our work. I’m committed to decolonizing counselling practice, working with power-with rather than power-over, and acknowledging systemic oppression including racism, discrimination, and other forms of marginalization. I honour diverse paths to healing, recognizing that Western psychology is one of many valid approaches.

Authenticity and ongoing growth

I practice what I teach — the tools and approaches I suggest are ones I use in my own life. I’m committed to continuous learning through research, training, client wisdom, and regular supervision. I avoid counselling jargon, using clear everyday language so we can focus on what matters most: your healing.

Beyond Counselling

The Integrative Trauma Recovery Model™

This empowerment-centered approach combines the depth of therapeutic expertise with coaching’s forward-moving focus, offering a holistic path toward nervous system regulation, relational transformation, and reconnection with your authentic self.

What’s it like to work with me

When we work together, you can expect:

I am genuinely curious about you and welcome all of your parts without judgment. I recognize that our darkest shadows can hold our most beautiful gifts.

If we encounter challenges in our collaboration, I see them as opportunities for growth — for both of us. If we get stuck, I get creative and look for new ways to support you.

I give you choices throughout your healing journey and am transparent about why I offer certain experiments or educational pieces. I share information and tools that might be useful, always with your consent, you choose what feels right.

I see theories and concepts as ways to increase self-awareness. We explore what resonates with you and what doesn’t, always prioritizing your lived experience.

I take responsibility for my behaviour and welcome honest feedback. I take care of my nervous system so I can be fully present and co-regulate with you.

I respect your boundaries and invite you to explore your own safely. I acknowledge the inherent power imbalance in counselling and reflect on how my privilege might affect our work.

I see you within your social context and acknowledge dynamics like stigma, victim-blaming, gender relationships, and racism that may impact your life and our work together.

Methods I use as a trauma counsellor in Calgary

True transformation goes beyond talking about “it,” it’s about integrating body, mind, and emotions. That’s why I use trauma-focused approaches that support holistic healing. I draw from evidence-based, trauma-informed methods including:

Parts work (IFS-informed)

To understand and heal the different “parts” of yourself shaped by past experiences.

Somatic and body-based approaches

To help regulate your nervous system and reconnect with your body’s wisdom.

EMDR therapy

To process and release distressing memories in a safe, structured way.

Polyvagal-informed practices

To work with your body’s natural stress responses and increase feelings of safety..

Neuroscience and structural dissociation

To deepen awareness of how trauma can fragment the self and how understanding the brain and nervous system supports healing

Anti-oppressive practices

To respect your systemic context, validate your experience, and model healthy relationship behaviours.
