Affordable Trauma Counselling Canada: Income-Based Pricing and Why It Matters

What matters to me — what has always mattered — is breaking the cycle of violence. In families. In communities. In countries. As a trauma-focused practitioner with more than 15 years of experience supporting adults, and as someone with over 30 years of personal trauma recovery, I help adults in Canada and internationally heal from childhood trauma, complex trauma, and relational trauma. That’s why I want to contribute to affordable trauma counselling canada.

Trauma moves through generations. It shapes how people relate to themselves, their children, their partners, their friends, and their communities. Every person who heals changes something in that cycle. Trauma moves through generations. It shapes how people relate to themselves, their children, their partners, their friends, and their communities. Every person who heals changes something in that cycle. That’s why I did my own healing — because I wanted to contribute to a healthier world.

Why access is more important than coverage

I believe high-quality trauma counselling should be affordable. Having lived outside Canada, I’ve seen that it’s possible: counselling priced for what people can actually pay, rather than what a benefits plan will reimburse, doesn’t have to mean compromising on depth or quality. That principle shapes everything about how I’ve structured my business.

Genuine trauma healing requires consistency. Relational wounds often need the container of the therapeutic relationship to heal — a practitioner who can co-regulate, who doesn’t fall into habitual survival patterns, and who shows up with honesty and authenticity.

Our nervous systems can heal — but they need enough sessions to actually learn to regulate. Recognising our parts, reconnecting with them, and healing their wounds is an inner process that can deeply transform our lives.

Even EMDR — praised for effective memory processing — requires enough preparation for the client to process without dysregulation. How much preparation depends heavily on what has happened to you. For single-incident trauma it can be shorter — but for childhood or complex trauma, preparation is usually significantly longer.

Overall, the process takes longer than most benefits plans allow — and it cannot be rushed without causing harm rather than healing.

Income-based pricing is how I honour that commitment. Not as a gesture. As the foundation of how I think about this practice.

I also recognize that no single counsellor or coach can solve the broader access gaps in mental health care. Income-based pricing is one way I work to reduce barriers while maintaining the conditions necessary for meaningful trauma healing.

Income-based pricing — a different approach to affordable trauma counselling

Many people searching for affordable trauma counselling in Canada are looking for counselling that remains accessible over time. Income-based pricing aligns the cost of sessions with each person’s financial situation, reflecting income disparities in society. It ensures that clients can access care that is fair, sustainable, and consistent in quality and depth.

Access to appropriate support shouldn’t depend solely on whether an employer benefits plan covers enough sessions of the right kind of therapy. For many adults with complex or childhood trauma, standard plans covering six to eight sessions are often not sufficient — and sometimes not the right approach at all.

My approach to affordable trauma counselling in Canada: variable pricing

My sessions are available from C$82 to C$110, with an optional Patron Rate of C$120 for clients with insurance coverage or those who wish to contribute to making trauma support more accessible. Rates are structured around income-based tiers, ensuring the cost reflects your financial situation while maintaining consistent quality and depth of care. Read more: Pricing.

Variable pricing is central to my business model and applies to both counselling and coaching services. The work remains the same depth and quality, regardless of the type of service or the rate.

My approach to trauma counselling — the Integrative Trauma Recovery Model™ — integrates EMDR, IFS-informed parts work, somatic methods, and anti-oppressive practices, adapted to your nervous system and your history. The model is flexible enough to meet different trauma presentations — whether you are navigating complex trauma, childhood trauma, or relational trauma.

I work primarily online, removing both geographic and financial barriers. With affordable trauma counselling Canada, Clients across Canada and internationally can access the same specialist approach from wherever they are.

Who chooses affordable trauma counselling Canada with variable pricing

People work with me from across Canada and internationally. What they share is some experience of trauma — or a suspicion they might carry it. They may be adults with childhood trauma, people navigating relational trauma, or those living with the effects of complex trauma.

Some are BIPOC individuals, 2SLGBTQ+ clients, immigrants, or people targeted by oppression who are looking for culturally responsive and aware trauma recovery. Some live in rural areas and prefer a mental health professional who isn’t part of their local community. Some have left an abusive relationship but don’t feel safe finding support close to home. Some are podcast listeners who already trust the approach before they reach out. Some have tried traditional talk therapy and found it didn’t reach what needed to be reached. And some are students who want to begin their healing as early as possible.

Coaching clients typically pay out of pocket, and the income-based tier structure means they can access this work regardless of where their income currently sits.

Most choose to work with me because the approach resonates — it feels intuitively right for their healing. Variable pricing doesn’t bring them here. It simply means that once they find this work, cost doesn’t have to be the reason they can’t begin or can’t sustain their recovery.

Why is my variable pricing built on continuity of care?

My pricing model is designed around continuity of care and deep healing. I understand that I cannot support everyone — my business must be sustainable, and it is not publicly funded. For complex trauma, meaningful recovery rarely happens in ten sessions. Building nervous system regulation, internal safety, and a strong therapeutic relationship takes time — rushing the process risks harm rather than healing. This is what my variable pricing model is designed to support.

The Integrative Trauma Recovery Model™ goes beyond standard talk therapy or life coaching. It integrates specialized trauma-focused training in the nervous system, parts work, somatic approaches, attachment, and dissociation — with a specific focus on relational, complex, and childhood trauma. These are skills that most counselling and coaching programmes do not provide. But training is only one element of the equation. Applying these tools to each client’s specific context requires professional expertise I’ve built over more than 15 years.

A healthy therapeutic relationship is itself a key element of healing. Ending a functioning relationship abruptly due to financial constraints can reopen wounds of abandonment — one of the most common injuries in childhood and complex trauma. Restarting with a new practitioner often means telling the same painful stories again and rebuilding trust with someone who may have a completely different approach. Income-based pricing supports continuity — making consistent, specialist trauma care possible for as long as the work requires.

How long will recovery take?

Trauma recovery is a process, and timelines vary depending on the depth and complexity of the experiences. For roughly half of my clients, significant progress emerges within six months to a year of consistent work. For many adults with childhood or complex trauma, healing often takes one to three years, reflecting early relational patterns and long-term adaptations.

It is not possible to predict exactly how long an individual process will take, but I provide consistent, thoughtful support as it unfolds. Clients who return periodically after completing deeper work — for a relationship transition, a loss, or a new layer that has surfaced — are building on a foundation they have already created. That continuity has its own clinical value and is difficult to replicate with a new practitioner.

How to begin

Many people aren’t sure whether their experiences “count” as trauma or whether they are ready to begin. Exploring that uncertainty together is often the first step. I offer a free consultation for new clients to understand what you are carrying and determine whether working together is a good fit. We can also discuss pricing openly during that conversation. There is no obligation or pressure.

If financial barriers have been holding you back, this consultation is an opportunity to explore options and begin consistent, trauma-focused support.
